The fact that very few Christians know that the 31st October also commemorates the start of the Reformation, purely coincidental?

The celebration of the pagan festival of Halloween is now a $2.4 billion merchandiser's market.

Fifty percent of Americans will decorate for Halloween (compared to over 80% for Christmas). It is now the third most popular party activity, after the Superbowl and New Year's Eve.

This is always a difficult time for Christians, especially those with children. It is also a dangerous time for some, since many of the seemingly "harmless" involvements associated with Halloween can also be "entries" for the occult, and can prove very tragic for the unwary.

There is only one true God (Isa 44:6, 8; 46:9). Thus, only one true religion. Scripture declares "all gods of the nations are idols" (Ps 96:5). All false religion and idolatry is by definition involved in demon worship - whether or not the participants recognize it (Acts 26:18). Hence Paul's concern. The spiritual power and reality behind idols involves demons (I Cor 10:20, Ps 106:37). The Bible tells us to shun occultic practices. This series will help you understand the Pagan background to the modern Halloween traditions practiced today.

After listening to your study on halloween, and being a former pagan high priestess of 10 yrs, then coming to know Christ in 1999, I have to say that the study was very accurate! Please do all you can to keep warning others about this dangerous time of the year.

THE ISLAMIC DIVIDE -

The terms Shiite and Sunni are heard often in stories about the Muslim world, but few people really know what they mean. Religion permeates every aspect of life in the Muslim world and understanding the differences between Shiites and Sunnis is important in understanding the complex geopolitics of the Middle East.

The division between Shiites (or Shia, there are a number of variations on the spelling) and Sunnis began in the years immediately following the death of the Prophet Muhammad, the founder of the Islamic faith. When Muhammad died in 632 AD there was a disagreement over who should succeed him as the political and religious leader of the Muslim world. One group of Muslims elected Abu Bakr, a close companion of Muhammad to be the caliph, or leader. However a smaller group believed that Muhammad's cousin and son-in-law, Ali ibn Abu Talib, was the rightful leader. The Muslims who believed that Abu Bakr should be Muhammad's successor have come to be known as Sunni. Whereas the Muslims who felt Ali should have been the successor are now known as Shiite.

Abu Bakr was the first caliph, although Shiites considered him to be a usurper. He was succeeded by Umar ibn al-Khattab and Uthman ibn Affan, the second and third caliphs. In the year 656 AD, 24 years after the death of Muhammad, Uthman was murdered. After Uthman's death Ali, whom Shiites had always considered the rightful leader, was finally elected to rule. Ali was opposed by Muhammad's wife Aisha, the daughter of Abu Bakr. Aisha challenged his authority and criticized Ali for his lack of interest in bringing Uthman's killers to justice. Aisha raised an army against Ali, which lead to the first Fitna, or Islamic civil war. Ali defeated Aisha at the Battle of Bassorah, also known as the Battle of the Camel. Ali's reign was turbulent and he was assassinated in 661 AD.

Under the leadership of the first four caliphs (Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, and Ali), the political, social, and religious institutions of Islam were solidified. Islam spread far beyond the borders of the Arabian peninsula, east into the Persian empire, north into Byzantine territory, and west across northern Africa. After Ali's death, however, Islamic unity splintered. Sunni Islam continued through the Umayyads and other dynasties that led to the powerful Ottoman and Mughal empires of the 15th to 20th Centuries. For Shiites, leadership was passed down through the Imams, who were believed to be divinely appointed from Muhammad's family. The 12th and final Shiite Imam died in the late 9th Century. After several centuries a council was appointed to elect an Ayatollah, the supreme Shiite spiritual leader.

The divide between Shiite and Sunni Muslims began as a political one, but this ultimately led to some religious and theological differences. The divide between the two sects has grown over time. Shiites and Sunnis disagree on the identity of the Mahdi, the coming Islamic messiah. They also disagree on the interpretation of various key passages of the Quran and the hadith. The Quran (or Koran) is the Islamic holy scriptures - the word of Allah. While the hadith are teachings and traditions passed down from Muhammad - not divinely inspired nevertheless very significant. Yet while there are differences in beliefs, both Shiites and Sunnis share the main articles of faith - the five pillars of Islam - which are the testimony of faith, prayer, giving to charity, fasting, and the pilgrimage to Mecca.

Shiites and Sunnis are the two largest Islamic sub-groups. However there are other sects, as well as divisions within the two groups. Sunni Muslims make up the majority, approximately eighty-five percent, of Muslims all over the world - they are spread from North Africa to Asia. However large populations of Shiite Muslims live in Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Afghanistan and India.

Islam is the world's fastest growing religion (depending on how you measure it), and is second in size only to Christianity, but the god of Islam and the God of the Bible are not one and the same. Allah is presented as unknowable and capricious, and is derived from the ancient pagan moon god. The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob delights in making and keeping His promises. Jesus summarized the entire Law of Moses in two commandments: Love God with all your heart, soul, strength, and mind; and love your neighbor as yourself. Nowhere does the Koran make such a commandment. Although there are many peace-loving Muslims, study of the Islamic religion will reveal that true Islam is anything but a peaceful religion. Islam demands the utter destruction of all Jews, Christians, and anyone who refuses to convert to the Islamic faith. It is a warrior code that demands Muslims live and die by the sword.

The truth about Islam is exactly the opposite of what you will hear on the news. Many Americans believe that Islam is a religion of peace and that Christians and Muslims worship the same God. In public schools we teach our children a doctrine of tolerance, and in some schools students are even required to memorize passages of the Koran. While in comparison, Islamic children are taught that America is the Infidel. We are the enemy. When the towers came crashing down on September 11, 2001 and thousands of innocent people were killed, Muslims all over the world danced in the streets and praised the hijackers. Islamic terrorists are referred to in the West as radicals and extremists, while in the mid-east they are heralded by fundamentalists as martyrs and heroes, and the families of suicide bombers are rewarded monetary pensions. The disparity between the two perspectives is staggering, still Americans are not willing to face the truth about Islam.

[Editor's note: This is a highly condensed overview of early Islamic history as it pertains to the division between Shiites and Sunnis. It is important to note that Islamic sects tend to disagree on many aspects of key historical events (one man's hero is another's villain). For a unique perspective on the relationship between Sunni and Shiite Muslims we encourage you to get the new briefing pack titled Shiite/Sunni: The Two Houses of Islam by Avi Lipkin. If you've never heard Avi speak you're missing out! Also, check out our briefing pack The Sword of Allah to learn more about the origins of the Islamic faith.]

MUSLIMS IN AMERICA

The Muslim holy month of Ramadan ended on Friday, October 12, and Muslims feasted under the new moon. In honor of Ramadan, on October 2, the U.S. Congress passed H. Res. 635, recognizing Islam as a great religion and rejecting "hatred, bigotry, and violence directed against Muslims, both in the United States and worldwide."

While the resolution praised moderate Muslims around the world who oppose violence and hatred, some members of Congress considered the resolution to be political correctness run amok.

"I am not opposed to commending any religion for their faith," Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-Colorado) said in a statement. "The problem is that any attempt to do so for Jews or Christians is immediately condemned as 'breaching' the non-existent line between church and state by the same (political and media) elite."

Walkersville, MD

In the meanwhile, a small farming town an hour north of Washington D.C. is embroiled in its own Muslim controversy.

Walkersville, MD is a rural town of 5000 people where conservative Christian churches abound and where the mayor also runs a local feed store. The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community USA now wants to build a retreat center on the largest farm in Walkersville, and local residents are fearful the site may become a breeding ground for terrorists. For their part, the Muslims (a sect that is neither Shia nor Sunni) have tried to breed good will by speaking to the locals.

Townspeople, however, are not only concerned about the Muslim invasion of the town, but about practical things like how 10,000 people coming in for a convention would affect traffic and the town's water supply. The town council will vote Tuesday night over whether to allow places of worship or private clubs on land that is zoned for agriculture.

The Muslim Question

On September 11, 2001, radical Islamists violently attacked America. It was not the first terrorist attack against America and it was followed by bombings in Madrid, Bali, London, and elsewhere. These attacks made clear the serious danger that fanatical Muslims pose to the world, and have made many Americans fearful and suspicious of any Muslims in their midst.

September 11 caused a backlash against Muslims, and also a back-backlash of pro-Muslim political emotion that has given perhaps more favor to Muslims than to Jews or Christians in the political arena. There are dangerous terrorists in America, and yet, many moderate American Muslims are decent, law-abiding people who are generous and warm friends. How should the majority Judeo-Christian population in America relate to our Muslim neighbors?

Islamo-Fascism Awareness Week

Fanatic Islam is a true threat, and this week the College Republicans have kicked off their Islamo-Fascism Awareness Week to "confront the two Big Lies of the political left: that George Bush created the war on terror and that Global Warming is a greater danger to Americans than the terrorist threat."

Muslim groups have criticized the College Republicans for breeding racism and fear of all Muslims. The College Republicans website, however, makes clear that they stand in solidarity with moderate Muslims. According to Algerian sociologist Marieme Helie Lucas, the term "Islamo-Fascism" was "initially coined by Algerian people struggling for democracy, against armed fundamentalist forces decimating people in our country, then later operating in Europe, where a number of us had taken refuge." Moderate Muslims are just as much a target of violence from Islamo-fascists as non-Muslims. They are an even greater target, in fact.

Tom Walker, president of UW College Republicans, does not believe all Muslims are dangerous. "Our main point is raising awareness of what we feel is an extreme brand of Islam that is spreading rapidly around the world and posing a threat to America and the Western world," he said.

Some people, like those farmers in Walkersville, MD, rarely have had a chance to meet and speak to Muslims. In other parts of the country, like Detroit, Muslim Americans abound. Whether speaking with a Muslim for the first time, or for the 401st time, the important thing to remember is that they are human beings for whom Jesus Christ died. All Muslims (whether they are bent on the destruction of western civilization or not) need to know about the love of God and the freedom from their sins that is offered through Jesus Christ. While we are wary of very dangerous groups of Muslims both in America and around the world, we know that their belief systems - and the demonic powers behind those beliefs - are the enemies, and not the people themselves.

The war on terror is not a war against Muslims. The true war is on the anti-christ forces in this world, forces that want to destroy all humans, all of those who are created in the image of God. Let's be wise as serpents and innocent as doves in the way we deal with our Muslim neighbors.

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places
. - Ephesians 6:12
