What is prayer? It is a spiritual
communion with God, as in supplication, thanksgiving,
adoration, or confession. It is a key part of our
relationship with God. But, it is much more, it is our
weapon for spiritual warfare. |

The Christmas Story - DVD by Chuck Missler
- What really happened in Bethlehem two
thousand years ago?
- Who were the "Magi?"
- Why a virgin birth?
- What does a Christmas Tree have to do with
it?
Each year at Christmas we celebrate the birth of
Jesus Christ.
After the New Year, we struggle to remember to add
a year as we date our checks, which should remind us
that the entire Western World reckons its calendar from
the birth of the One who changed the world more than any
other before or since.
It is disturbing to discover that much of what we
have been taught about the Christmas season seems to be
more tradition than truth. Santa Claus isn't the only
myth or legend that has arisen out of this season.
On what "loophole" does the Messianic hope rest?
Who were the Maji? And why a "virgin birth?" Find out

WHEN WAS JESUS BORN?
Each year at Christmas we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. After
the New Year, we struggle to remember to add a year as we date
our checks, which should remind us that the entire Western World
reckons its calendar from the birth of the One who changed the
world more than any other before or since. Yet, it is disturbing
to discover that much of what we have been taught about the
Christmas season seems to be more tradition than truth.
Most serious Bible students realize that Jesus was probably not
born on December 25th. The shepherds had their flocks in open
fields, which implies a date prior to October. Furthermore, no
competent Roman administrator would require registration
involving travel during the season when Judea was generally
impassable.
If Jesus wasn't born on December 25, just when was he born?
Although the Bible doesn't explicitly identify the birthday of
our Lord, many scholars have developed diverse opinions as to
the likely birthday of Jesus.
The early Christian church did not celebrate Jesus' birth, and
therefore the exact date was not preserved in festivals. The
first recorded mention of December 25th is in the Calendar of
Philocalus (AD 354), which assumed Jesus' birth to be Friday,
December 25th, AD 1. This was subsequent to Constantine's Edict
of Toleration in AD 313, which officially ended the
government-sanctioned persecution of the Christians. The date of
December 25th, which was officially proclaimed by the church
fathers in AD 440, was actually a vestige of the Roman holiday
of Saturnalia, observed near the winter solstice, which itself
was among the many pagan traditions inherited from the earlier
Babylonian priesthood.
The year of Jesus’ birth is broadly accepted as 4 BC, primarily
from erroneous conclusions derived from Josephus’ recording of
an eclipse, assumed to be on March 13, 4 BC, “shortly before
Herod died.” There are a number of problems with this in
addition to the fact that it was more likely the eclipse
occurred on December 29, 1 B.C. Considerable time elapsed
between Jesus’ birth and Herod’s death since the family fled to
Egypt to escape Herod’s edict and they didn’t return until after
Herod’s death. Furthermore, Herod died on January 14, 1 BC.
Tertullian (born about 160 AD) stated that Augustus began to
rule 41 years before the birth of Jesus and died 15 years after
that event. Augustus died on August 19, 14 AD, placing Jesus’
birth at 2 BC. Tertullian also notes that Jesus was born 28
years after the death of Cleopatra in 30 BC, which is consistent
with a date of 2 BC. Irenaeus, born about a century after Jesus,
also notes that the Lord was born in the 41st year of the reign
of Augustus. Since Augustus began his reign in the autumn of 43
BC, this also appears to substantiate the birth in 2 BC.
Eusebius (264-340 AD), the “Father of Church History,” ascribes
it to the 42nd year of the reign of Augustus and the 28th from
the subjection of Egypt on the death of Anthony and Cleopatra.
The 42nd year of Augustus ran from the autumn of 2 BC to the
autumn of 1 BC. The subjugation of Egypt into the Roman Empire
occurred in the autumn of 30 BC. The 28th year extended from the
autumn of 3 BC to the autumn of 2 BC. The only date that would
meet both of these constraints would be the autumn of 2 BC.
Another approach in determining the date of Jesus’ birth is from
information about John the Baptist. Elisabeth, John’s mother,
was a cousin of Mary and the wife of a priest named Zacharias
who was of the “course” of Abijah (Priests were divided into 24
courses and each course officiated in the Temple for one week,
from Sabbath to Sabbath). When the Temple was destroyed by Titus
on August 5, 70 AD, the first course of priests had just taken
office. Since the course of Abijah was the eighth course, we can
track backwards and determine that Zacharias would have ended
his duties on July 13, 3 BC. If the birth of John took place 280
days later, it would have been on April 19-20, 2 BC (precisely
on Passover of that year). John began his ministry in the 15th
year of Tiberius Caesar. The minimum age for the ministry was
30. As Augustus died on August 19, 14 AD, that was the accession
year for Tiberius. If John was born on April 19-20, 2 BC, his
30th birthday would have been April 19-20, 29 AD, or the 15th
year of Tiberius. This seems to confirm the 2 BC date and, since
John was five months older, this also confirms the autumn birth
date for Jesus.
Elisabeth hid herself for five months and then the Angel Gabriel
announced to Mary both Elisabeth’s condition and that Mary also
would bear a son who would be called Jesus. Mary went “with
haste” to visit Elisabeth, who was then in the first week of her
sixth month, or the fourth week of December, 3 BC. If Jesus was
born 280 days later it would place the date of his birth on
September 29, 2 BC. If Jesus was born on September 29, 2 BC, it
is interesting to note that it was also the First of Tishri, the
day of the Feast of Trumpets (see our briefing package on
The Feasts of Israel).

THE MYSTERIES OF MARS.
Tonight, December 18, Mars will pass within 55 million
miles of Earth, offering star-gazers an excellent view of the
Red Planet. In fact, a better opportunity to catch a glimpse of
this mysterious planet won't come along until the year 2016.
For most casual stargazers, Mars goes unnoticed. To the naked
eye it is merely a tiny orange speck of light in the night sky.
Yet there may have been a time when this mysterious planet drew
close enough to be catastrophic to life on planet Earth.
Most scientists take for granted that the movements of the
planets and other objects in our solar system manifest an
unchanging uniformity through time. These movements, however,
also manifest minute variations that have, so far, eluded any
consistent conjectures. Furthermore, careful observations of the
objects in our solar system indicate that it has been - at least
at times - a rather rough neighborhood. Take a look at the Moon
through a telescope and you will see a lot of bruises. Or
examine any of the photographs from our space probes. You'll see
innumerable impact craters and other evidence of collisions and
catastrophes. There is evidence that the present orbits were not
always so - and some of the changes appear to have occurred
during the memory of mankind.
Why did so many of the early cultures worship the Planet Mars?
They were terrified of it. It was called the "God of War." The
two moons of Mars are named Phobos, meaning "fear" or "panic,"
and Deimos, meaning "terror" or "dread." Why? These are only a
few of the mysteries associated with this strange planet.
Mars Interferes?
The recent space age discovery of "orbital resonance" - the
tendency of orbits to synchronize on a multiple of one another -
has led to a fascinating conjecture that the orbits of the Earth
and the Planet Mars were once on resonant orbits of 360 days and
720 days, respectively. A computer analysis has suggested that
this could yield orbital interactions that would include a near
pass-by on a multiple of 54 years, and this would occur on
either March 25 or October 25. Such near pass-bys would transfer
energy, altering the orbits of each.
In near proximity, such pass-bys would be accompanied by
meteors, severe land tides, earthquakes, etc., and this would
help explain why all the ancient cultures were so terrified by
the Planet Mars and why calendars tended to reflect either March
or October. A series of such near pass-bys could also explain a
number of the "catastrophes" of ancient history, including the
famous
long day of Joshua and several other Biblical episodes.
Stability appears to have been attained during the last near
pass-by in 701 B.C., resulting in Earth's and Mars' present
orbits of 365 1/4 days and 687 days, respectively. Provocative,
but where's the evidence?
Swift to the Rescue
Oddly enough, corroboration for this remarkable conjecture
can be found in the writings of Jonathan Swift, in his famous
fantasy known as Gulliver's Travels. In his third
voyage, Gulliver visits the land of Laputa, where the
astronomers brag that they know all about the two moons of Mars.
Their highly detailed description includes the size, the
rotation, and the revolutions of each of the two moons.
What makes this particular allusion so provocative is that the
two moons of Mars were not discovered by astronomers until 151
years after the publication of
Gulliver's Travels in 1726. It was in 1877 that Asaph
Hall, using a new telescope at the US Naval Observatory, shocked
the astronomical world by discovering the two moons of Mars.
What makes the two moons so difficult to see is that they are
relatively small in diameter and have an albedo (reflectivity)
of only 3 percent. They are the darkest objects in the solar
system, almost black. The two moons are also unique in their
rotations. For Swift to have "guessed" these correctly is
absurd.
Yet the telescopes of his day were inadequate to have actually
seen these objects. But then how could he have known what the
astronomers of his day did not? Swift, in order to embroider his
satirical fiction, undoubtedly drew upon ancient records (Homer
and Virgil were among those who wrote about what they called the
two "Steeds of Mars"). He probably assumed they were simply
legends, not realizing that they were actually eye witness
accounts of ancient sightings when Mars was close enough for the
two moons of Mars to be viewed with the naked eye!

EU SIGNS HISTORIC TREATY OF LISBON.
It has been over two years since European voters rejected the
EU Constitutional Treaty. In the wake of their defeat EU leaders
tried to revive the constitution, but were unsuccessful. The
people had spoken – or so it seemed. Today, the EU constitution
is once again set to become the law of the land. However it is
now being called the EU "reform treaty" and this time around its
fate may not rest in the hands of the people.
The EU reform treaty, also called the Treaty of Lisbon, was
signed last week on Thursday, December 13th. If all goes as
planned the treaty will be ratified by member states next year
and will enter into force on January 1, 2009. Yesterday, Hungary
became the first EU nation to ratify the new treaty. Hungary's
parliamentary approved of the measure just days after it was
signed.
The Treaty of Lisbon is essentially a repackaging of the EU
constitutional treaty - critics say the bulk of the document
remains unchanged. However because it is not technically a
constitution, government leaders may be able to ratify the
treaty without submitting it to national referendums. By taking
away the people's opportunity to vote on the treaty, it has a
better chance of survival. According to Bertie Ahern, the Irish
Prime Minister, the reform treaty is "90 percent the same" as
the former constitutional treaty and that "the substance of what
was agreed in 2004 has been retained. What is gone is the term
'constitution'."
For many Europeans the EU constitution represents a loss of
sovereignty and national identity. Which is one of the primary
reasons why voters rejected the constitution in the first place.
However the bureaucrats in Brussels think they know best, and
they aren't afraid to admit it:
Valery Giscard D'Estaing, Chairman of the Convention which drew
up the EU Constitution told reporters: "The difference between
the original Constitution and the present Lisbon Treaty is one
of approach, rather than content... The proposals in the
original constitutional treaty are practically unchanged. They
have simply been dispersed through the old treaties in the form
of amendments. Why this subtle change? Above all, to head off
any threat of referenda by avoiding any form of constitutional
vocabulary." He also said that "Public opinion will be led to
adopt, without knowing it, the proposals that we dare not
present to them directly...All the earlier proposals will be in
the new text, but will be hidden and disguised in some way."
José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission, has
stated publicly: "Referendums make the process of approval of
European treaties much more complicated and less predictable...I
was in favor of a referendum as a prime minister, but it does
make our lives with 27 member states in the EU much more
difficult. If a referendum had to be held on the creation of the
European Community or the introduction of the euro, do you think
these would have passed?"
Like the constitutional treaty, the so-called reform treaty
establishes a new permanent EU president and a new foreign
policy chief. It also abolishes national vetoes in more than 50
areas, strengthens the powers of the European Parliament and
European Commission, and gives the EU formal legal "personality"
for the first time, enabling it to sign international treaties.
The document itself is enormous, almost 500 pages, that is
supposed to streamline the government. Critics complain that the
document is too long and too complex. It is written in highly
technical legal jargon that has proved difficult even for
experts to understand, much less the general public. According
to Giuliano Amato, former Italian Prime Minister and
Vice-Chairman of the Convention which drew up the EU
Constitution, the treaty is confusing by design. He is quoted as
saying: "They decided that the document should be unreadable. If
it is unreadable, it is not constitutional, that was the sort of
perception. Where they got this perception from is a mystery to
me."
Recently the European Commission also suggested merging EU
embassies throughout the world. The new reform treaty already
creates a European diplomatic service and a new post of EU
foreign minister. According to EU leaders, merging the embassies
is a natural next step in creating a stronger, more-centralized
Europe.
The strategic geopolitical horizon of past half-century has been
dominated by two superpowers: the United States and the USSR.
But it is becoming clear that the two dominant powers of the
next half-century apparently will be China in the east and the
"new Europe" in the west. Europe's economy has grown steadily in
recent years and can boast of a GDP larger than the United
States'. Former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan made
headlines in September when he said that the Euro could
eventually take the place of the dollar as the world's primary
reserve currency. Also, earlier this year Europe eclipsed the US
in stock market value for the first time since the first World
War.
In March the EU celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of
Rome. The historic agreement that established the European
Economic Community, the foundation of what would eventually
become the European Union. Over the last fifty years the
European Union has emerged as a growing world power. The EU now
encompasses more than 460 million people, stretching from the
Arctic to the Mediterranean and east all the way to the Black
Sea.
